Annual report of the Chief Inspector 2002-03

This report provides an overview of the work of the UK government's Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI), with the aim of highlighting matters of interest, mainly at the policy level, which may affect the development of the learning and skills sector as a whole. It includes a range of statistics relating to inspections of learning providers in further education, adult and community education, and under government schemes such as Jobcentre Plus and Learndirect. Characteristics of the best and worst providers are compared as well as areas of learning, showing the relative strengths of more academic subjects such as mathematics, languages and communications. The conclusion is that, generally, learning provision has improved since the previous year, but that there needs to be greater clarity about the aims of learning provision and a consistent approach at a national level.
