Discussing issues relevant to the school-to-work transition process in countries with advanced economies, this paper draws on three sources: (1) an OECD thematic review, the report of which is titled 'From initial education to working life: making transitions work' (indexed at TD/TNC 64.124); (2) the November 1999 Education Committee meeting; and (3) 'Preparing youth for the 21st century: the transition from education to the labour market' (indexed at TD/IRD 88.133). This paper includes three sections: (1)'Attributes and importance', which discusses the importance and role of various attributes of the transition process; 'Determinants', which discusses the factors involved in successful and unsuccessful transition outcomes; and (3) 'Policy', which focuses on policies surrounding school-to-work transitions and questions their effectiveness. It is concluded that despite the research into the school-to-work transition process, many issues are not resolved and will need further investigation.
