This paper draws on two evaluative studies undertaken in Austria to develop a self concept-based model to explain work motivation. The aim of the model is to underpin the development of more effective training for vocational rehabilitation. The studies examined the process of reintegration into the labour market of a number of clients of two training agencies, i.e. employment companies. The research revealed that motivation influenced the clients’ reintegration process. A number of concepts for enhancing and sustaining work motivation are discussed. Recommendations are made for designing work-based training based on these concepts of motivation.
