This paper examines the collaboration between US community-based organisations to provide employment services in a market that is becoming increasingly concerned with performance. The rising demand for helping the disadvantaged into jobs is noted. The challenges faced by community-based organisations in meeting the new demands of the labour market for disadvantaged job seekers and becoming more effective providers are discussed. The benefit of these organisations in ‘knowing their communities’ is acknowledged but, in order to satisfy employers and job-seekers, they must improve their performance. Actions that community-based organisations can take in response to these challenges are outlined.
