This volume highlights the continued increase in illiteracy and undereducation despite global efforts to tackle these problems. It is noted that surprisingly little use of distance education and open learning has been made in addressing them. The volume gathers global experience in the use of distance and open learning to meet the needs of basic education in a variety of contexts. It contains case studies, analysis and critical assessment designed to contribute to a clearer understanding of the issues associated with the application of distance education and open learning to combating educational deprivation. The chapters are: Basic education at a distance: an introduction / Chris Yates and Thomas Tilson; The elusiveness of integration: policy discourses on open and distance learning in the 1990s / Elaine Unterhalter, Catherine Odora Hoppers and Wim Hoppers; Audiences for basic education at a distance / Lynette Anderson and Barbara Spronk; Basic education curriculum: contexts and contests / Richard Siaciwena and Jennifer O’Rourke; Organisational delivery and structures / Tony Dodds and Palitha Edirisingha; Evaluation and quality / Judith Calder and Santosh Panda; The use of technologies in basic education / Keith Harry and Abdul Khan; Finance, cost and economics / Francois Orivel; Literacy and adult education through distance and open learning / Usha Reddi and Anita Dighe; Basic education and refugees and nomads / Jason Pennells and Chimah Ezeomah; The power of open and distance learning in basic education for health and the environment / Pat Pridmore and Stephanie Nduba; Open schooling at basic level / Janet Jenkins and Arief S. Sadiman; Outcomes: what have we learned? / Chris Yates.
