This paper is a very personal discussion of what the future holds for Australia's youth. It draws on research reported in Dusseldorp Skills Forum's 'Australia's youth: reality and risk' indexed at TD/TNC 53.12, and 'Australia's young adults: the deepening divide' indexed at TD/TNC 57.01 and offers key findings about teenagers and young adults in Australia. These findings are: marginalisation of young people; falling school retention rate; youth unemployment; the youth labour market is collapsing; young people are losing out on training; early school leavers are disadvantaged; and skills are not adequately recognised. The paper reviews work, both past and current, into partnerships as a way to solve some of the difficulties facing marginalised young people. Early intervention and effective case management are also mentioned as useful strategies.
