This book examines the history of the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme (CRTS) from its inception in 1942 to its conclusion in 1952. It relates how the CRTS, which provided returning servicemen and women with educational and vocational opportunities to assist in their re-establishment after the Second World War, gave educational opportunities to many people who would otherwise not have had access to them. The book includes a number of personal accounts written by CRTS trainees in 1998, fifty years after their training, and demonstrating not only the personal benefits that these people gained from the scheme, but also the benefits to Australian society as a whole.
