The 2003 Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) conference was held in Brisbane in August 2003. This paper looks at the place of the Associate Degree in higher education qualifications and its application within the vocational education and training (VET) sector in the form of the Associate Degree qualification recently approved by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The paper concludes that Associate Degrees are not about developing narrowly prescribed competencies but are about building a self-motivated workforce in which individuals have the flexibility to move through many learning situations and jobs in their lifetime.
