The purpose of this paper is to generate discussion around a series of options in relation to the governance of research and evaluation funded by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA), including its relationship to the current arrangements for national data collection and performance management in the vocational education and training (VET) sector. Part one of the paper sets the context, including recent reviews of VET research in Australia, an analysis of comparable models of applied research from Australia and overseas, a description of the objectives and elements of a coordinated national program of VET research and evaluation and a brief synopsis of the current arrangements in relation to national data and performance management. Part two looks at possible options for the governance of a coordinated national program of VET research and evaluation in Australia. Part three suggests options for models of longer term research.
