In response to legislative requirements relative to the educational and employment rights and needs of people with disabilities, vocational special needs educators have been endeavouring to improve vocational programs by modifying teaching strategies and coordinating resources. The success of individuals with disabilities in employment is influenced by access to effective educational programs, by cooperation between employers and employees and by the support of legislation. This study found that: there was a level of employer awareness of legislation, assistive technologies and vocational rehabilitation programs for people with disabilities; employers demonstrated a willingness to hire qualified individuals with disabilities; employers generally believed that people with disabilities possessed the fundamental job requirements such as general job skills, academic skills, attitudes toward work and interpersonal skills; employers believed that access to a community resource network would encourage them to hire people with disabilities, and desired financial aid to pay for remodelling facilities, purchase of assistive devices and staff and employer training programs.
