This paper looks at the potential for teacher shortages in Australia in both primary and secondary sectors and reports on a project to update information of teacher supply and demand in Australia. The research suggests that in the post-2004 period Australia is likely to face increasing shortages of teachers due to age-based retirements. The extent of the shortfall will depend on the success of policy initiatives to attract and retain teachers. Retraining teachers qualified in areas of greater supply so that they can teach in areas of greater demand is an issue that workplace planners must consider.
