Cybrary skills in the tertiary environment: in-service education for librarians from developing countries

In this article, the author describes the 'Cybrary skills in the tertiary environment' program offered by the University of Queensland library to librarians from tertiary institutions in developing countries. Library professionals in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region are confronted with the drive to 'implement the electronic library' along with a shortage of continuing education to cater for the skills required to undertake such a role. The program consists of four self-contained modules and participants may undertake one or more of the modules as part of a training session designed to meet their needs through consultation between the University and the client groups. Information technology (IT) courses can be offered in addition to the modules and participants undertake workplacements as part of the training program. The author describes the generic program and examines critical success factors.
