This digest, published each month except July and August, provides summaries of recent information pertaining to vocational education and training issues in the UK and Europe. The feature articles in this issue are: 'Opportunity and excellence: first steps' by John Twining (p. 8-10) in which the author reviews the 'next steps' document, which sets out the UK government's program for action to reform the curriculum for 14-19 year olds in response to the consultation process following the release of the Green Paper, '14-19: extending opportunities, raising standards' (indexed at TD/IRD 88.170) which outlined proposals for such reform; 'The many facets of learning and skills research' (p. 10-12) which completes Educa's report on the proceedings of the Learning and Skills Research Network Conference, held at the University of Warwick from 11-13 December 2002. The focus is on some of the 'tracked sessions' (work-based learning; information technology skills of trainee teachers; efficiency of students' Internet searches; evaluating educational technology; the relationship between research and practice) and on drawing out some issues and conclusions. The first part of this report was published in issue 228 of Educa (indexed at TD/TNC 72.471). This issue of Educa also reports on the latest developments in the UK associated with: assessment and qualifications; basic key skills; disadvantage; education and training management; employment and unemployment; further education; guidance; information and communications technology; lifelong learning; open learning; research; teachers and trainers; training; and vocational preparation.
