A key goal of Alberta Learning is to ensure that students are well prepared for lifelong learning, the world of work and citizenship. Possessing post-secondary credentials is regarded as critical to achieving this goal. This report, which profiles the 1999/2000 Grade 12 student cohort entering Alberta post-secondary institutions in the fall of 2000, provides policy makers in both secondary and post-secondary sectors the opportunity to evaluate education policy and curriculum and work towards the goal of creating an integrated learning system. It is presented in 10 sections: section one contains the introduction; section two describes the Grade 12 cohort and compares the students who move into postsecondary education with those who do not; section three examines the patterns of post-secondary attendance by institution; section four considers how demographic characteristics such as age and gender are reflected in post-secondary attendance; sections five to seven describe the academic characteristics of new post-secondary students, covering diploma status, Grade 12 course averages by institution and patterns of core Grade 12 course completions by post-secondary institution respectively; section eight examines the jurisdiction and origins of new post-secondary students; section nine describes the patterns of post-secondary attendance among delayed entry students from 1998/1999; and the final section contains notes on the methodology that underpins this report.
