Although much attention is given to HRD[human resource development] in firms of Fortune 500 size, little is known about the extent of workplace learning in small to midsize businesses. Yet small businesses are playing an increasingly important role in the world economy and are critical to the well-being of the US economy. Furthermore, workers in small businesses generally indicate higher job satisfaction than those in large organisations. This study measures the extent of workplace learning in small to midsize businesses, delineates the level of job satisfaction in these businesses, and examines the relationship between workplace learning and job satisfaction.
