In China's quickly changing market economy, mid-level professionals have become interested in increasing and developing their marketable workforce skills. English training is presented as a viable career development mechanism in China for local Chinese to develop soft skill components. Career development opportunities via adult education under communism historically have been limited. New proprietary foreign owned schools have made English training a commodity to meet local demand. The author qualitatively explores the motivations behind this demand for English training among 32 local Chinese working adults, many of whom will never use English in their work. The overall career development value of English training is highlighted and discussed.
