In this article, the author provides a personal account of her leadership role in a South Australian high school, stating that change initiated in secondary schools to ensure student needs are being met will be successful and sustainable if it is supported with efficient use of resources and the commitment of the school principal. She focuses on the following five areas of change in secondary schools: (1) curriculum options and delivery; (2) curriculum management; (3) personnel management and human resources; (4) community partnerships; and (5) marketing and promotion. The article concludes with a number of issues which need to be considered in implementing and sustaining new initiatives in secondary schools.
