The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has been managing nine Flexible Learning Advisory Group (FLAG) funded research projects on online learning for the last three years. In this article, the author considers the latest research into further education and online learning, focusing on 10 key messages for vocational education and training (VET) teachers and managers based on the nine projects. The 10 key messages are: the key issue is flexibility; it isn't easy to find out how much learning there is; while online learning isn't cheap, there are ways to make it cost effective; beware of technocrats bearing gifts; use market research, plan and evaluate; adopt a 'whole of business' approach where you can - better integration is needed; staff involved in online learning don't believe managers understand their problems; staff need proper resourcing and support; a range of industrial relations issues need to be looked at to properly support flexible approaches, including online learning; funding models are tied to past practices and need to change.
