This report is one in a series published by the European Training Foundation (ETF) on the current vocational education and training (VET) systems in countries of the MEDA (Southern Mediterranean) region. The report provides an overview of the national vocational training system in Malta along with coverage of the key challenges facing the country in the development of vocational training systems. In 1999, Malta renewed its application for membership to the European Union (EU) and is planning to reform the whole vocational training system. With its strong Western traditions, no major problems are envisaged for Malta to concur with current EU practice in the field of VET. However, there is a need to strengthen the existing system. Key issues for development are: the establishment of a transparent national system of qualifications; the further development of the role of social partners; the development of continuing training in new economic growth areas; and increased funding for VET. The report highlights the need to streamline these priorities under the overall program of ongoing reforms. In terms of international cooperation, the sharing of foreign expertise and experience would be useful so that successful initiatives from overseas could be tailored for application in Malta. The chapters are: Introduction; Executive summary; The Republic of Malta; The vocational education and training system; Continuing vocational training; Challenges for vocational education and training in Malta in the accession perspective; Recommendations for further discussion on the vocational education and training system; Annexes.
