Work-based project overcomes basic skills stigma

In September 2001, the Advocate Worker for Learning scheme was introduced at Shotton steelworks by Steel Partnership Training Ltd (STP), the training arm of the Iron and Steel Trade Confederation. It was an initiative designed to provide colleagues with guidance about local learning opportunities as well as to promote lifelong learning within the workplace. Its introduction coincided with a growing interest in information technology (IT)skills among the plant's workers. In this article, the author looks at this initiative which has led many workers to recognise the need to address basic skill issues.
