Focus on quality must not ignore learners' interests

Findings from a pilot inspection of adult and community learning services found high motivation of both teachers and learners in the sector, but also identified a number of significant weaknesses in teaching and learning, such as inadequate initial assessment and not enough attention being given to individual learning needs. This article looks at the inadequacies of adult and community learning services, discusses the Adult and Community Learning (ACL) Quality Support Programme and suggests that the real challenge lies in making sure that all this focus on quality actually works in the best interest of learners.
