'Training & employment' is a quarterly English-language newsletter aimed at informing the international community about research and other activities undertaken by the Centre for Research on Education, Training and Employment (CEREQ) in France. The article in this issue highlights the varied conditions of labour market entry for young people between countries in Europe. The authors present three models of labour market entry for young people that are distinguished by the relative importance they accord to experience and training in the school-to-work transition. They also outline the different forms of labour market organisation in each country as these also influence the situation of young entrants. The situation in Denmark is used to illustrate the first model where conditions of labour market entry are linked to the nature of the qualification acquired in initial training. Italy is used to highlight the model in which young entrants, whatever their training level, find it difficult to obtain employment and the school-to-work transition is a lengthy process of gradual improvements to the initial entry situation. France and the UK are used to illustrate the third model. This model is the most complex and is characterised by greater access to jobs and occupational mobility than the other two models. However, work experience and qualifications acquired in initial training both play a role in obtaining employment but are interchangeable from the perspective of employers.
