The second survey of continuing vocational training (CVTS2) was launched by the European Commission and follows on from the first survey conducted in 1994 of the Member States of the European Union. The second survey was conducted in 2000 and 2001 in all the Member States, Norway and nine candidate countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Pomorskie region of Poland, Romania and Slovenia). This publication gives some initial key information on continuing in-service training in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Finland, Sweden and Norway. A total of some 35000 enterprises in these countries participated in the survey and provided comparable statistical data on the forms, content and extent of continuing vocational training (CVT) at work, the supply of, and demand for, vocational knowledge and skills, inhouse training resources and the use of external training providers, and key data for analysing the costs of continuing training. The data for Greece, France, Italy and the UK were not available at the time of publication. The survey results revealed: (a) a north-south divide in the percentage of enterprises providing CVT; (b) significantly more use of external courses than inhouse courses; (c) a participation rate of approximately 40% in CVT courses; (d) that Spain recorded the highest number of course hours per participant; (e) 1.2% to 3.0% of labour costs were invested in CVT; and (f) that staff skills matched company skill requirements in those enterprises not providing CVT. Results for the nine candidate countries are indexed at TD/TNC 71.580.
