Making workers 'fit': educational standards, corporate discourse and the new workplace

This paper critically analyses the American National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) publication 'Equipped for the future content standards: what adults need to know and be able to do in the 21st century' (TD/TNC 71.607). The Equipped for the Future (EFF) standards were developed to define what adults needed to know and be able to do in the workplace. The NIFL focused on a customer-driven approach and proposed a new approach based on the three roles adults face as parents, citizens and workers. The paper argues that standards need to reflect the complexity of workplaces and focus on workplaces as well as workers.
