This paper addresses the view that since the focus of the workplace is on productivity, the importance of the worker in learning and assessment practices is often overlooked. It is suggested that competency based training (CBT) and competency based assessment (CBA) can be very narrow in interpretation by assuming sameness amongst workers, rather than differences, as the focus of assessment practices. These differences are explored within the food production industry in regional Victoria, Australia, in a study which seeks to understand, by means of qualitative research involving interviews and observations, how assessment practices impact on workers and what workers can do to contribute to assessment practices. This paper reports on the progress of the study.
