Toward an understanding of the organizational learning process

Factors such a globalisation and technological change have produced a fast-changing workplace. This paper suggests that there has been a transformation from an industrial workforce to one of 'knowledge workers' resulting in a need for continual learning in the workplace. Increasingly, organisational learning is seen as essential for business survival. The author looks at organisational learning from two perspectives: the psychodynamic and the cultural. These perspectives are reviewed and the author suggests that the two are inextricably linked. Finally, grounded theory, a qualitative methodology, is described and it is suggested that this is an effective method for studying organisational learning and the two perspectives.
