This report provides a statistical overview of the Swedish education and research system. Educational policy over the last half of the 20th century has pursued the goal of expanding access to education so that as many citizens as possible are able to study the educational program of their choice. The report begins with an overview of Sweden and its population and the growth of the education system throughout the country's history. The Swedish model of education is then presented. This section covers pre-school activities and child daycare, compulsory school, and upper secondary school. The section on higher education includes universities and university colleges, undergraduate education, advanced vocational education and postgraduate education. The adult education section outlines municipal adult education, education for adults with learning disabilities, folk high school, adult education associations, labour market training, and staff training. The last part of the report examines study assistance, research and development, and educational attainment levels for the Swedish population. Swedish research and education are increasingly characterised by globalisation and participation by students, teachers and researchers in exchanges with other countries is growing steadily. A bibliography of English language publications and websites addressing aspects of the Swedish education system is included.
