This article presents the systems approach to designing instructional programs to show how it can be used to create effective learning environments for adult learners, using the example of learners in Swaziland who were beneficiaries of the outcome when instructional systems design (ISD) and adult learning theories were merged. The article provides an overview of adult learners before focusing on adult learners in Swaziland. The use of the systems approach to designing effective programs is discussed, including an outline of the major characteristics of the systems approach for designing instruction. Instructional strategies for achieving improvement in student learning are given and the 'nine moments to instruction' explained. Includes references.
