Convergence, vol. XXXIV, no. 2-3, 2001

'Convergence', published quarterly by the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE), addresses issues, practices and developments in the broad field of adult and nonformal education. This special issue reports on the ICAE Sixth World Assembly on Adult Education which had the theme of 'Creativity and democratic governance'. It is presented in eight sections. The first section contains the editorial introduction (p. 3-6), a commentary to this issue of 'Convergence' by the President of ICAE, Paul Belanger (p. 7-10), the text of the speech given by Jamaica's Prime Minister, P. J. Patterson, at the opening ceremony (p. 11-18) and the Ocho Rios Declaration in English (p. 19-22), French (p. 23-26) and Spanish (p. 27-30). The second section contains the plenary session paper: 'Addressing the effectiveness of adult education in the English speaking Caribbean' by Lawrence D. Carrington (p. 31-36) which addresses the issue of 'fragmentation' of the delivery of adult education. Section three contains the task force report 'State of the art of adult education: CONFINTEA follow up' by Maria Bonino (p. 37-40) which emphasises the importance of establishing meaningful indicators to assist in evaluating the progress made towards achieving the objectives agreed upon at CONFINTEA and includes three recommendations for ICAE to this end. Section four contains the following workshop reports (p. 41-64): Making a case for adult learners: guidebook on policy advocacy; Policy advocacy for adult literacy; Adult learning documentation and information: building the network; Primary health care reform in the Americas: implications for human resource development and lifelong learning; Lifelong learning and adult education policy; Adult education in prison; Adult learners week/learning festivals workshop; Adult learning: a tool for the empowerment of people facing the rapid transformation of work; Global citizenship and gender justice; Peace education and the resolution of violent conflict; Globalization and social movements learning: Seattle, Port Alegre, Quebec City and beyond; Training the post-CONFINTEA adult educator. Sections five to seven contain papers presented at the public panel, position papers and cultural papers respectively and include the following English language papers: Women's right to learn / Sara Hlupekile Longwe (p. 65-73); Presentation for panel on 'policy advocacy for the right to learn of all women and men' / Maria Lourdes Almazan Khan; Policy advocacy: for the right to learn of all women and men / Sergio Haddad; Advocacy: making the case for adult learners / Alan Tuckett; Contesting discrimination based on sexual orientation at the ICAE Sixth World Assembly: 'difference' is a fundamental human right' / Robert J. The final section contains the closing statement.
