In this paper on leadership, the author argues that greater attention needs to be given to middle managers if colleges are to respond to new ways of working and if the organisational capacity of the college is to be enhanced to tackle increasingly complex systemic change. She discusses the importance of context in college leadership and the need to extend the middle managers' repertoire through management development.
