This publication looks at leadership, and how it affects student achievement in FE [further education] colleges. The four authors approach the subject from different angles, between them covering literature on the subject, the differences between management and leadership, the role of middle managers, and the training for team leaders within the Raising Quality and Achievement [RQA] program. The introductory and final chapters pull together some of the overall conclusions reached by these studies and suggest an approach to further research work. The publication is relevant to leaders throughout FE colleges - indeed, one of the main points made is that leadership can be exercised at all levels within the college. The chapters are: Introduction / Chris Horsfall; Leadership in further education: a summary report from a review of the literature / Stephen J. Sawbridge; A shift from management to leadership / Alan Hooper; 'It all goes wrong in the middle': a reassessment of the influence of college structures on middle managers / Loraine Powell; Team leaders make a difference in raising achievement! / Chris Horsfall.
