Charles Desforges is a prominent and highly influential advocate for more, and more relevant, educational research. In his keynote speech at the FERN [Further Education Research Network] conference of December 2000, presented in this publication, he argues that in order to promote the impact of educational research, we need to consider above all the role and significance of 'knowledge transformation'. Desforges maintains that practitioners should be far more involved in research than they are at present, and underlines the need for research findings to have a positive impact on practice. You may not agree with everything he says, but Desforges' lecture is an important and stimulating contribution to the question of how we think about the role of educational research today.
