Evaluation journal of Australasia, vol. 1, no. 2, December 2001

'Evaluation journal of Australasia', published twice a year, is the official journal of the Australasian Evaluation Society (AES) and contains both refereed and unrefereed articles. The refereed articles contained in this issue are: 'Building a performance-based monitoring and evaluation system: the challenges facing developing countries' by Jody Zall Kusak, Ray C. Rist (p. 14-23) which describes a 10-step approach to the design and construction of monitoring and evaluation systems; 'Making two plus two equal five: adding value through the use of internal data in evaluation research' by Anne Sharp (p. 41-45) which examines the ways in which internal data can be used in the evaluation research and how it can be used as an intermediate platform in the reconciliation of two independent surveys. Other articles in this issue include: 'Monitoring: the slow cousin of evaluation, or an equal partner?' by Marc de Boer (p. 8-13) which argues that the view that monitoring plays a secondary role to evaluation proper underestimates the potential of monitoring information in enhancing the value of evaluative work; 'Evaluation research in Australasia: moving forward' by Ralph G. Straton (p. 24-26) which is the text of the Presidential address delivered at the AES 2001 conference and which examines the evaluation theory and practice by looking at the challenges to consolidate, innovate and expand; 'The wheelbarrow, the mosaic and the double helix: challenges and strategies for successfully carrying out mixed methods evaluation' by Lois-ellin Datta (p. 33-40) which discusses some of the challenges and pitfalls in carrying out mixed methods studies and includes some approaches to avoiding the pitfalls.
