- Societal and cultural enabling environment, spaces, knowledge and agency for lifelong learning
-
In this paper, the author begins by stating that lifelong learning in knowledge societies requires the creation of social spaces and institutions in society and in the political system to secure access and flexibility, thereby creating a mutual relationship with societal transformation. The paper then goes on to discuss the term 'knowledge society' and how knowledge should be transferred and interact with local conditions to create an enabling environment of learning. This includes a discussion of the learning society, the civil society as an arena of public debate and learning, local and expert knowledge, the engendering of learning culture, the social and cultural learning regimes, and democratic learning and cultural diversity.

- Human memory
-
This paper looks at the role of human memory in the understanding of learning, particularly lifelong learning. It discusses the main features of human memory and how memory changes as a function of age. Included in the discussion is the Betula Study which examined the development of memory and health in adulthood and old age. Three age functions (episodic memory, semantic memory, and perceptual representation system) are presented to show that memory systems develop differently throughout life. The author concludes that significant age deficits can be seen in episodic memory tasks but there are no age deficits for tasks assessing other memory systems when proper consideration has been taken of background factors like education.

In this paper, the author discusses the role of the information and communication technologies (ICTs) in changing the learning environments within which increasing numbers of people around the world are operating. The paper is presented in three sections: the nature of ICTs; individual and collective access to information and paths to knowledge; and the horizontal structures of the Internet and the implications of learning adventures and ICTs. The main aim of this paper is to consider ways in which ICTs may be considered to transform perspectives on learning in ways that can challenge existing hierarchies.

- A youth contribution to lifelong learning
-
The goal of AIESEC (Association Internationale des Etudiants en Sciences Economiques et Commerciales) is to broaden the horizon of young people with the aim of helping people in the world to live together more peacefully. This paper discusses what lifelong learning means to AIESEC. Four examples to describe the lack of lifelong learning in society are presented: lack of learning to take over responsibility; lack of attention to current issues in school; lack of important topics in school education; and lack of partnership and co-operation between generations and cultures. This is followed by a discussion, from a young people's perspective, of strategies and concepts that support a process of lifelong learning.

- Lifelong learning in uncertain - threatening? - times
-
In this paper, the author points out the risks or threats which can emanate from a search for creative and inclusive solutions for fostering a culture of lifelong learning. She questions whether it is possible to find creative and inclusive strategies and partnerships without considering the theoretical, political and economic contexts of contemporary educational reforms in the underdeveloped countries and states that thinking of creative, inclusive ideas about lifelong learning without explaining concrete strategies for implanting them could constitute a threat to the ideas pursued.
