This publication, the first in the series, lays down the groundwork for a more informative analysis of the wider benefits of learning. 'Wider benefits of learning' fall into two categories: the non-economic benefits; and benefits, in addition to those accruing to individuals, which are above the level of the individual. The authors' primary concern is postcompulsory learning or learning that takes place after initial education. The structure of this paper is as follows: the first section, entitled 'Modelling and measuring: scope and sources', examines the approaches to using data sources and models and provides a summary of methodological issues and an introduction to the selective literature reviews; the second section, entitled 'Literature reviews', provides a selective overview of the health, ageing, families, crime review and citizenship domains; and the third section, entitled 'Implications for future work', looks at the methodological and theoretical issues and provides a framework for the research agenda. Included as an appendix is the summary of the initial research program.
