This monograph, developed from a thesis and field research carried out in 1995-96, presents an account of literacy and development amongst women in Nepal. It challenges the assumptions that women's literacy rates can be correlated with statistical indicators of development, such as women's health, empowerment, etc. Instead, it looks at local women engaging in a range of literacy practices, focusing on the processes by which people acquire literacy and deploy its use for their own purposes and presenting detailed accounts of women's views. The aim has been to bridge the gap between policy makers, fieldworkers and participants by bringing together their different perspectives on gender, literacy and development. The chapters are: Exploring the link between women's literacy and development; Reading between the lines; Literacy for women: theory for whom and by whom?; Whose language?: language as a policy issue; The new or old literacy?: approaches to literacy and numeracy teaching; 'Change is coming because of more progress in education': literacy and development ideologies; Women's literacy and development: linking research and planning.
