What skills are needed to ensure survival and growth of small enterprises in Kenya

This paper looks at micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Kenya. The author defines MSEs as businesses with less than 50 employees, forming the largest commercial/business sector in Kenya and providing employment opportunities for disadvantaged people, particularly those operating in the informal sector. Many of the people employed in the informal sector lack basic skills necessary for businesses to prosper. In order for the MSE sector to grow, Business Development Services (BDS) units have been set up to assist in the provision of a range of skills. This paper looks at the role of BDS units in Kenya and offers the following ways good practice may be achieved: (1) consistent and thorough research and the use of proven business development concepts; (2) commitment to projects reaching large numbers of people and achieving positive impact; (3) identification of marginalised groups so that desired impact may be achieved; (4) cost effectiveness of programs; and (5) the provision of services that are demand-driven and financially sustainable.
