The employment situation in Cameroon is bleak, particularly for many young people who lack the vocational training and skills that could link them to the labour market. Traditional education in Cameroon, with its emphasis on general education and little or no vocational education and training, has also failed to address the needs of young people who can not find employment. This paper reviews the activities of the Youth Development Centre (YDC), which was created in 1998 with the aim of offering training and skills development to young people to enable them to enter the labour market or to create their own areas of employment. Training activities of the YDC include: (1) Handicrafts and carpentry in order to make use of abundant locally available raw materials like bamboo and cane which can be used for furniture and baskets as well as training in painting and design; (2) Sustainable agriculture and care of livestock; and (3)Computer literacy programs. The author concludes by suggesting that the present educational system in Cameroon should be changed from general to vocational.
