This brief paper succinctly details the importance of skills development and training in the informal sector of economically poor developing countries, particularly for women and young people. The necessity for skills development and training to reflect local conditions, to create the possibilities of self-employment and to be based on local raw materials and traditional and indigenous knowledge is emphasised. As well, the need for well-trained personnel for quality training is emphasised. The author states that investment in appropriate, quality skill development and training is rarely wasted.
