This paper reports on the Organisation Workshop (OW) approach to training which was developed in Latin America more than 30 years ago and was adapted to the Southern African context approximately 14 years ago. The OW approach is community-based and provides communities with a framework to facilitate the achievement of a comprehensive package of training, skills development, education, self-management training and some basic infrastructure. The education, training and skills development takes place around work activities and includes literacy, numeracy, basic organisational skills, child care and cultural activities. The strengths and weaknesses of the OW approach are briefly touched on and a 'road map' for preparing and conducting an OW is given.
