Linking work, skills and knowledge: a personal reflection and the Southern African experience

In this paper the author focuses on 'the people's economy' or the informal sector in sub-Saharan Africa. The struggle to improve levels of skills and knowledge takes place before a backdrop of poverty, considerable social upheaval and the scourge of AIDS/HIV and with the many aid organisations and workers in the region a coordinated and well-planned approach is necessary. The author stresses the importance of agents of development not being prescriptive, but engaging in a process of community consultations so that communities can receive what they need in terms of programs and resources.
