Major consequences of armed conflict in countries like Sierra Leone are the destruction of social capital, decline in educational standards, few development initiatives, unemployment, high levels of trauma and increase in crime rates. The informal sector in Sierra Leone is very large, with a high level of illiteracy. However, most of the training activity has taken place in the formal sector. Efforts are being made to change this with initiatives such as the Accelerated Literacy Program (ALP), programs of entrepreneurship training and a growth in non-formal vocational training institutions.
