The National Skill Standards Board (NSSB) is the national authority on developing a system of skill standards and has established a national framework and common language including skill standards, assessments and certifications. However, many industry, labour, professional and education interest groups have established nationally recognised, industry-validated skill standards. In addition, the NSSB does not have a role in developing curricula and instructional materials at the national level. In this brief article, the author suggests that nationally recognised, industry-ratified skills standards could be used as a basis for the development of education and training curricula, and explores the benefits of this and ways in which national skill standards could be employed to meet local needs.
