This brief article examines the huge growth in the credentialling/certification industry in the United States of America (USA) which has taken place over the last three decades. The author looks at why organisations enter the certification market, the factors driving the demand for certification, and the various types of credentials. It is concluded that credentials vary in their scope, mission and purpose and that the labels used for credentials have different meanings depending on the program sponsor and what the credential represents.
