The Enterprise & Career Education Foundation (ECEF), formerly the Australian Student Traineeship Foundation (ASTF), was established with funding from the Australian Commonwealth Government to promote opportunities for young people to gain workplace knowledge and experience before graduating from secondary school. Employers play a key role in the ECEF's structured workplace learning (SWL) programs and this national survey was undertaken in 2000 to determine the level of employer awareness of and participation in the programs. The research also investigated the 'drivers' of employer participation in SWL and the decision making process undertaken by employers about their participation. Comparisons were made with a similar survey conducted in 1998 to identify any changes in employer awareness, attitudes and perceptions. Key findings from the survey are discussed in relation to key indicators of participation, sources of awareness, activities influencing participation, attitudes to benefits to the organisation, most influential benefits for winning participation, attitudes to the program by industry distinction, levels of participation, experiences of participating employers, and employer concerns. The report is divided into two sections: a table of definitions, an executive summary, survey methodology and key findings; and detailed results of the survey including tables of main data and comments drawn from the data. The full text of the questionnaire used for the survey is contained in Appendix A.
