The introduction of integrated examinations in training for the regulated occupation of technical draftsman in August 1994 marked the beginning of a fundamental reform of the examination system in the dual system of vocational training in Germany. The reform erased the distinction between theoretical and practical examinations in favour of a form of testing based on on-the-job tasks and processes. The authors describe how the concept of the integrated examination has become an established testing procedure, how practitioners view the new testing procedure, what the procedure's strengths and weaknesses are and the potential of the integrated examination with regard to the modernisation of the final examinations in vocational training.
