The impact of research on decision-making by practitioners and managers

Previous studies have shown that the relationships between research and its decision making outcomes are complex and not easily discerned. This paper draws on a range of recent Australian studies in vocational education and training (VET) and health care. The first section of the paper introduces the parameters of the study. The second section outlines a framework for analysing the relationships between research and decision making and the linkages between them. Section three outlines the relevant studies in VET from which the evidence was drawn. Section four discusses the sources in Australian health care from which evidence was drawn. Section five looks at the similarities and differences in the relationships between research and decision making by practitioners and managers in the sectors of hospitality and tourism and health care. Section six contains conclusions and recommendations.
