Recent research has shown a persistent drop in retention as Indigenous students move towards postcompulsory education and a relative over-representation of Indigenous students in vocational education and training (VET) in schools, courses and programs. This paper reports on recent research into the success of two innovative approaches to the delivery of VET in schools, one focused on hospitality and tourism and the other on health care. It is suggested that these programs have been successful because they stretch the boundaries of VET in schools and ensure a close cultural fit between course content and the realities of local employment opportunities.
