Keeping the bosses off my back: power and knowledge in first line management discourse

The original intent of the research described in this paper was to study the language, literacy and numeracy skills needed by trainee first line managers. The author contends that isolating language, literacy and numeracy skills as units of knowledge without context created a deficient model. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to offer a broader view of language, literacy and numeracy in terms of social practice and the creation of social identities.
