In this paper the author suggests that the global intermeshing of economic systems and enterprises and the increasingly intensive degree of international cooperation are giving rise to a new set of tasks and requirements for the education system and its institutions, especially firms and vocational schools. German industry is responding to the increased importance of vocational training in a number of ways, and has a key role to play in two respects: (i) specifications for professions and jobs determine how qualifications are targeted, structured and achieved; and (ii) it is primarily industry that determines how vocational training is conducted and fashioned. The paper looks at how and why industry assumes responsibility for shaping vocational training using a case study of the largest transport service provider in Germany and Europe, Deutsche Bahn AG.
